Heung-min Son scores two shock goals as ‘fifth-placed’ Tottenham slip to another 0-4 defeat at Newcastle

It was a nightmare come true.

Tottenham lost 0-4 away to Newcastle United in the 33rd round of the 2023-2024 English Premier League (PL) season at St. James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, on Sunday (Sept. 13).

In a game that could have seen them leapfrog Aston Villa for fourth place, Spurs conceded back-to-back goals in the first 30 minutes and 33rd minute of the match, and then quickly conceded a second goal in the second half.

Tottenham suffer from St. James’ Park phobia, having lost 1-6 at Newcastle last season and then 0-4 again.

Add to that the fact that Spurs, who have a “big four” target for next season’s UEFA Champions League, have slipped to fifth place in the table with 18 wins, six draws, and seven losses (60 points, 16 goals for), trailing Aston Villa (60 points, 17 goals for) on goal difference.

Tottenham lined up in a 4-2-3-1. Son Heung-min will start up front, with Timo Werner, James Maddison, and Brennan Johnson in the second line. The midfield is Rodrigo Bentancur-Yves Bissouma and the back four is Destiny Udogie-Micky van der Vaan-Christian Romero-Pedro Foro. Guglielmo Vicario started in goal.

Right from the start, Tottenham favored. In the seventh minute of the first half, Spurs combined Werner and Johnson in a great move. Johnson broke down the flank and sent in a cross. Werner got on the end of it, but the ball was headed wide. Werner’s shot was a bit of a disappointment.

The 16th minute saw Son Heung-min make another good pass, as he played an out-and-out pass with Werner just outside the box to break down Newcastle’s five-back. Werner collected the ball, folded once and fired a shot straight at the post that bounced off Son.

But Spurs were starting to lose ground. In the 30th minute, Newcastle capitalized on a mistake by Son Heung-min and took advantage of a long ball in from the back from Gordon, who beat Udogie to the ball. He slipped the ball to Isaac, who finished past van der Penn to make it 1-0.

That wasn’t the end of it. In the 33rd minute, another Tottenham mistake struck again. An inaccurate backpass from Foro was intercepted by Gordon. Gordon 메이저토토사이트 sprinted onto it and finished past Van der Penne to make it 2-0. The first half ended 2-0.

Tottenham brought on Emerson Royale for Foro in the fourth minute of the second half, but once again, they were unable to capitalize. Tottenham went on the counter-attack after a turnover by Son Heung-min, and Aleksander Isak finished off a pass from Bruno Guimarães to make it 3-0 and effectively seal the win.

With the game completely out of reach, Tottenham were forced to make a number of substitutions. In the 12th minute of the second half, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came on for Bissouma, Pape Sarr for Bentancur, and Dejan Kulusebski for Son Heung-min. But it wasn’t enough.

In the 43rd minute, Fabian Dele Alli headed home a cross from Gordon’s breakaway in the box. The game ended in a 0-4 defeat for Tottenham.
