Cha Jun-hwan (Korea University), a leading figure skater in the men’s single figure skating competition in Korea, has won the opportunity to participate in both the national and world championships in the next season by building a gold tower for eight consecutive years in the 78th National Men’s and Women’s Figure Skating Championships and the second round of the national team. In the men’s free skating competition held at the indoor skating rink in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province on Tuesday, Cha earned 89.35 points in technical score (TES), 90.08 points in artistic score (PCS), and 179.43 points in total.
Cha earned 275.94 points overall including 96.51 points in the short program, beating over runner-up Lee Si-hyung of Korea University (241.05 points, Korea University) and third-ranked Seo Min-kyu of Kyungshin Middle School by a wide margin. Cha has continued his eight-game winning streak since 2017, and has now secured a berth to the ISU 2024 World Championship, which is given to the top three men’s singles players. He also received the Taegeuk mark for the next season, which is awarded to five men’s singles players by combining the scores of the first round of the national team selection match with those of this year’s national championship.
In the aftermath of his ankle injury, Cha only ran four rounds of jump, lowering the difficulty level of the program’s composition. After completing his domestic competition, Cha will participate in the ISU Four Continents Championships in Shanghai, China, later this month, and start preparing for the world championships in Montreal, Canada, in March.
Meanwhile, second-ranked Lee Si-hyung and fourth-ranked Kim Hyun-kyum (Han Advertising) will also join the World Championship. Third-ranked Seo Min-gyu will join the Junior World Championship due to the age restriction.
