Unexpected ‘downfall’…11-year EPL veteran ‘humiliated’

The mood in Europe is that it’s over. Both the club and the player are unexpected.

British media outlet ‘The Bootroom’ reported on November 11 (KST), “European clubs’ interest in Hugo Yoris (36) was lacking. An offer from a Saudi Arabian club failed to convince Yoris. He will stay at Tottenham Hotspur until the January transfer window.”

Yoris was the captain of Tottenham. He was handed the captain’s armband by Son Heung-min ahead of the 2023-24 season. It was the choice of head coach Ange Postecoglou. Christian Romero, 25, and James Maddison, 26, will be vice-captains.

He’s a Tottenham legend. Yoss left Olympique Lyonnais in his native France in 2012 to join Spurs. He remained Spurs’ first-choice goalkeeper for a whopping 447 games. He’s been a part of the team’s history. In the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League (UCL) final, he was in goal for Tottenham with a string of saves.

However, last season, Yoris went into a sharp decline. His dip in form was noticeable, especially in the two games against North London rivals Arsenal. On top of that, he suffered injuries during the season. Against Newcastle United, he conceded six goals and was the cause of a heavy defeat.

The criticism only intensified. During the season, Tottenham were still being linked with a goalkeeper. Brentford’s David Lallana and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez were linked. There seemed to be no place for Yoris.

Eventually, after the season, Yoris himself announced his departure from Spurs. Speaking to his native media, he declared that it was time for a “new challenge” and that he would be moving on in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham have completed a goalkeeping generational change. They brought in Guglielmo Vicario, 26, from Serie A in Italy. Vicario has played full-time in all four Premier League games since the start of the season. He’s been a perfect replacement for Yoris with his outstanding goalkeeping.

Yoris’s departure seemed imminent. The BBC reported that “Tottenham are in talks with Lazio to 토토사이트 sign Yoris. Tottenham want a fee for Yoris, who has one year left on his contract,” according to the BBC.

However, Yoris rejected Lazio’s offer. He reportedly didn’t want to be a backup goalkeeper. That was the end of the summer transfer window. Yoris remained at Tottenham. But he’s long since fallen out of Spurs’ plans. His name isn’t on the roster.

The club’s reporter wasn’t expecting it either. “I didn’t expect his stock to drop like that, I’m sure the player was surprised,” journalist Alasdair Gold said on YouTube, adding, “There were definitely offers from Saudi clubs, but they couldn’t convince him.”

“Yoris could be out of action for months,” The Boot Room added, “and it’s doubtful his situation will improve in the January transfer window.”
